South Lexington and Hartland biohazard and trauma cleanup

Between New Circle Road and the Kentucky River sit some of the city's largest apartment complexes and some of its quietest country roads. Gainesway and the Tates Creek area hold more renters than owners. South of Man o' War Boulevard, Hartland, Squire Oak and the Veterans Park neighborhoods are newer single-family streets, and past them the land falls away toward Raven Run and Clays Ferry. Where your address lands on that spread decides who you call first, who has to approve the work, and what the cleanup company needs to bring along.

Who to call, briefly

For Hartland, Gainesway, Tates Creek, Veterans Park and the farms toward Clays Ferry, we refer callers to independent cleanup firms across ZIPs 40515 and 40517. City police and the county coroner work the scene first; addresses on the Jessamine or Clark County side of 40515 go to those counties. Once they release the home, call our line to reach a company for trauma, hoarding, death or sewage work.

Gainesway, Belleau Wood, Tatesbrook, Stoneybrook, River Park, Brigadoon and Chippendale Square, along Tates Creek Road between New Circle and Man o' War, Wilson Downing Road and Gainesway Drive. Tates Creek High and Middle share Centre Parkway, and the city runs Tates Creek and Meadowbrook golf courses here. Housing dates mostly from the 1960s to the '80s, and nearly two-thirds is rented, so property managers and condo boards often have a say in cleanup.

2Questions from Tates Creek to Clays Ferry

Do Lexington police come to a house near Clays Ferry that's in Jessamine County?

No. A slice of 40515 crosses into Jessamine County, and another into Clark, even though mail there carries a Lexington ZIP. Those addresses fall to Jessamine or Clark County law enforcement and that county's coroner. Whichever office responds decides when the property is released. Our line connects those homes the same way, so tell us the road and the county when you call.

Is fentanyl residue in a Tates Creek apartment handled like a meth lab?

Not under state rules. Kentucky's decontamination statute and regulations name methamphetamine only: a posted meth property needs a contractor approved by the Energy and Environment Cabinet, and the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department tracks the notice. No matching standard exists for fentanyl, so before the unit is re-rented, have the crew explain its surface testing, its protective equipment and where contaminated debris ends up.

A neighbor reported my Hartland house for clutter. What happens now?

Complaints about unsafe or unsanitary conditions in Lexington go through LexCall 311 to the Division of Code Enforcement, which looks into reported violations. If an adult can't care for themselves, Adult Protective Services may also get a report, though a competent adult can refuse services. A hoarding crew can work room by room with you, keeping what matters, so the house meets code.

3Apartments by Tates Creek, farms by the river

Housing in 40517 went up mainly in the 1960s, '70s and '80s, when Tates Creek Road and Gainesway filled with subdivisions, condominiums and apartment complexes. Only about a third of households own their home, one in eight units is a townhouse, and roughly a fifth of homes are in big complexes of ten-plus units. Cleanup on these streets often means working inside a complex in the Gainesway or Tates Creek area, where a property manager holds the keys and neighbors share walls, stairwells and sometimes ventilation.

South of Man o' War, 40515 is newer. Hartland, Hartland Estates, Squire Oak, Tanbark, Lake Crossing and the streets around Veterans Park grew mostly from the 1980s on, and close to a third of homes date from 2000 or later. Seven in ten are detached houses on their own lots, while apartment complexes line parts of Man o' War Boulevard. East Hickman Creek crosses the ZIP, and Veterans Park on Southpoint Drive is the big green anchor for the neighborhoods around it.

Past the subdivisions, Tates Creek Road, Old Richmond Road and Jacks Creek Pike run through farms and estates to Raven Run Nature Sanctuary, Kelley's Landing and Clays Ferry on the Kentucky River. Some of 40515 lies in Jessamine County to the southwest and Clark County to the southeast, and those addresses answer to their own county officers and coroner. On a rural lot, the work has to account for distance, a long drive and possibly a septic tank instead of city sewer, which, on the Fayette side, falls under the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department's onsite sewage program.

4Cleanup calls common south of Man o' War

Crime scene cleanup

In the Gainesway and Tates Creek complexes, a violent incident in one unit can leave blood in a stairwell, on a shared landing or in carpet that runs under a neighbor's door. Common areas may stay closed while affected flooring and drywall come out as biohazard waste, and cleaning continues until the unit can be lived in again. Single-family scenes in Hartland follow the same steps on a smaller footprint.

Suicide & trauma cleanup

Families in Squire Oak, Lake Crossing or Belleau Wood should not have to clean a room themselves after a suicide or violent injury. When the coroner's investigators hand the home back, a trauma crew can do it quietly; ask whether they use unmarked vehicles. Personal items can be set aside for you to review later, and nothing has to be thrown out without your say.

Sewage backup cleanup

Ground-floor units in 40517's older complexes take the worst of a building's backup, and rural 40515 homes on septic have their own failures. The LFUCG Division of Water Quality handles public sewer lines, and its Protect Your Pipes guidance blames fats, oils and grease for many clogs. Once raw sewage covers a floor, it has to be extracted, soaked drywall and carpet removed, and surfaces disinfected.

5Who comes first below New Circle

Call 911 when someone is injured or has died. The Lexington Police Department covers every address in Fayette, so officers come whether you live off Gainesway Drive or out on Jacks Creek Pike. The Fayette County Coroner's Office investigates deaths that are sudden, unexplained or the result of violence, and state law says no one moves the body until the coroner gives the word. Keep the house or unit closed until both offices release it. Across the Jessamine or Clark line in 40515, those counties' officers and coroner fill that role. Renters in the Tates Creek and Gainesway complexes should call the management office, which controls entry and may already work with a vendor; condo owners should tell the association. Then phone our line with the full address, and you will be connected with a cleanup company that serves it.

Prep list for Hartland and Gainesway homes

  1. Keep the Lexington Police case number from the Gainesway or Hartland call; your adjuster will ask.
  2. Before anyone goes in, confirm the coroner has finished; near Clays Ferry that may be Jessamine's or Clark's office rather than Fayette's.
  3. In a Tates Creek-area condo, find out which walls, ducts and hallways the association owns.
  4. On rural roads near Raven Run or Clays Ferry, tell the crew whether the house is on septic.
  5. Near Man o' War Boulevard, get written entry permission from apartment management before work.
  6. Save receipts and photos from the Southpoint or Squire Oak address for any compensation claim.
